"The 2006 Caravina (95.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4.5% Petit Verdot) is also surprisingly soft for a wine from this vintage, with melted tannins and lots of scorched earth, blackberry, and cassis notes. With full body and a silky suppleness, it should drink well for a decade as well...[The Seavey Caravina Cabernet] is perhaps the best second label wine in Napa."
Seavey's eighth estate-produced Caravina, the 2006, was made from grapes that came from vines planted in several different locations of the south-facing hillside vineyard. The rich fruit benefited from a hot summer with several heat spikes and an extended growing season with a long harvest that began in mid-August and concluded in mid-October.
Winemaking style followed classic Bordeaux methods. Harvested at optimal ripeness, the juice remained in contact with the skins for an average of 15 days, with malolactic fermentation occurring in barrel. The wine was aged in French oak barrels (40% new oak) and bottled in May 2008.
