2005 Caravina Cabernet 1.5

2005 Caravina Cabernet 1.5

TASTING NOTES

A bright and enticing nose of cassis, black cherry, mint and charred wood notes. This wine is elegant and expressive, offering a rich and dense palate of tobacco, espresso, sandalwood, prunes, and Earl Grey tea. Now in its second decade, the tannins are still prominent but essentially well integrated, silky and smooth. A classic Napa Cabernet true to its vintage.

RATINGS

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate (Jun. 2015) - 90 points
"The 2005 was showing very well, fully mature, with stunning aromatics of chocolate, loamy soil notes, blackcurrants and licorice. Intense, medium to full-bodied, supple and round, this is a gorgeous second wine..."

Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate (Dec. 2008) - 90 points
"The 2005 Caravina (100% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1,100 cases) is showing even better this year than last. Gorgeous fudge/chocolate notes intermixed with blackberry and cassis, sweet silky tannins, and a long finish with no hard edges make for a delicious wine already showing complexity..."

VINEYARD NOTES

Seavey's seventh estate-produced Caravina, the 2005, was made from grapes that came from vines planted in several different locations of the south-facing hillside vineyard. The grapes were harvested with low yields (on average 1 to 1.5 tons/acre) from September to October. Mild weather conditions during the long growing season avoided stressing the ripening fruit.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Winemaking style followed classic Bordeaux methods. In the winery, the grapes were sorted, destemmed and gently lifted into small tanks for fermentation. The juice remained in contact with the skins for an average of three weeks. Malolactic fermentation occurred while the wine aged for 19 months in French oak barrels, (50% new oak), and was bottled on May 25, 2007.
